  • Pinion Yoke Wear - Woe is Me?!

I pulled the pinion yoke from Dylan's B3-PW known as "Cherry Blossom."
The seal surfaces are not pitted too badly, that is good. However, it's pretty obvious that the leather seal had run dry for many of her 18,000 miles. There's a .025" deep groove where the leather seal rides. That's a .050" diameter reduction. I'm concerned that a speedi-sleeve will either conform to the groove or just wear through. I'm looking for either assurance or ideas. Will this thing be likely to seal as it is? Does anybody have a decent solution to returning this pinion yoke back to service?

Redi-Sleeve. However I don't have the part number(s) handy, hopefully someone will pipe in with them.

          I found a solution - NOS!

NOS units are still available. I got mine at VPW.
I thought about the time and effort to fix it well, and, it looked like it would actually be just as cheap to replace it. I don't have much of a metal machine shop and my little toy lathe would be inadequate.

I hear VPW now has a Neoprene Pinion seal also instead of just offering the leather. In my mind it would seal against a speedy sleeve better and with less pressure than the factory type leather seal does. Any thoughts on this?

The sleeve should be fine if it is installed with the yoke-groove filled with epoxy. I also stack a pair of seals, rather than just one.

Another method is to turn the yoke down, then press on a heavy steel sleeve and turn the yoke back to spec.

I'd go with the epoxy/speedie-sleeve route
