  • Replacing leaking auto tranny grommet?

My '77 W200 has been leaking tranny fluid for a while. I needed to change the filter anyway so I dropped the pan, adjusted the bands and installed a new gasket. Seemed to fix the problem, but after sitting a while I had fluid seeping again. Appears to be coming from where the shifter enters the housing.

I've not looked at the shop manual yet. Anybody familiar with replacing this seal/gasket/grommet/whatever? Can it be done from the outside or do I need to drop the pan again?

    Thanks,

Actually its a 2 part video, with the 2nd part showing a GM tranny shifter seal. Not the most professional but gets the point across.

The shifter stem has a seal in the case.
There is a special tool used to remove it from the top.
Otherwise your removing the valve body, which you really don't want to do.

          Uggg.

Is the special tool like something from harbor freight or more specialized? I can't just pry it out from the top with screwdrivers or punches like ?

I've already winterized my pressure washer but I guess I really need to degrease/decrud under there. Heck it's supposed to reach 70* here today anyway...

            HF might have one.
It slips over the stem and
            Threads into the seal.
Also there is a seal and I believe an o-ring
Inside the stem because it's a shaft inside a shaft.
You cant pry it out like
            A GM.

Since you have a W200 you may have better access by removing the carpet & transmission "hump".

Good idea, it's actually an M880 (not sure why my signature doesn't show anymore) so no carpet. I think the hump is just screwn down I can't remember. Guess I'll have to hose/vacuum so I can see the floor...

Tom - what do you call that tool? Is it like a slide hammer?

Hadn't thought about the shaft-in-a-shaft part. I'll dig out the manual today and see if it discusses that o-ring.

Thanks guys, I was beginning to think this board had died.

I believe it's called a transmission selector seal removal tool For Mopar.
It's like a puller threads into seal then tighten the bolt on top against the stub shaft and pulls the seal.

You might be able to rent one from a reputable auto parts store

A lot of members have passed away in the past couple of years, plus there are more websites & social media locations to discuss things Dodge/Power Wagon, so yes activity has fallen off. I don't even come as much myself, having gotten married & acquiring mortgage/grandkids in the past 2 yrs.

Keep asking questions, those with answers will chime in.

This is one of my favorites. I guess not only members pass away but there's fewer and fewer of our trucks out there anymore as well...

So I took the quick lazy approach and decided to try "miracle in a bottle. I've had good luck with Lucas products in the past and added some of their trans fix stuff. Only had about 2 tablespoons leak out after the first shut down. We'll see if that last until I can do a proper fix.

                      Thanks guys,

Glad to hear a Band-Aid slowed the bleeding.

Every Torqueflite I ever owned leaked somewhere.
