  • Axle pinion shaft seal caution

Learned a lesson the hard way.

I installed all new axle pinion seals a while ago. It is NOT a fun job nor is it a 10 minute job.

That said I got it done and felt good about it,,,, for a while.

What I found out is that if anyone out there does this job clean the area where the new seal fits into of all dirt and then apply a nice coat of Permatex inside the housing where the seal will be pressed into. You may think its a waste of time but that's what I figured too. What has happened is that oil is seeping out around the outside of the seal, not the seal surface on the shaft but between the body of the seal and the axle housing due to some irregularities in the casting.

We have all had our painful learning experiences. The upside of all that is that we retain what we learned so well.

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

If you can clean it ,there is a way to fix it

Paint - enamel should be fine . Not a perfect fix but I have done this and it has worked -brush not spray . Surface must be clean , clean , clean .
Keep the paint off the rubber part of the seal .
