  • 53 M37 still pops out of first gear under load?

Ok guys, looking for some of your experience to answer a question. I have new bearings in the stock c88671 transmission behind the stock 230 six engine. This past weekend I did the machining to repair the loose shifter pin and made a new cone washer for the spring underneath the shifter ball. Much better but under a load such as going up a good hill in four low it will still slowly walk out of first gear. I have also installed new shift rails in the trans top. What am I missing?

You probably did this, but did you replace the shift-rail detent springs?

I did not as I could not locate any. They appeared to be the same length and appeared to be same strength but maybe that is it. Any idea where to find some?

If you have already inspected them and they are in good shape, it would seem you have done your duty. I assume the detent balls had no apparent wear either.

It was a long shot, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Did you notice if the plastic inserts on the shift forks are in good shape ? I have seen some cases where the are missing.
