  • Pinion Seal

When installing a new rear pinion seal (the part was from VPW) , does one use Permatex, Indian head or any other sealant?

    Indian head works well.
If the seal is nos leather
Be sure to soak in oil for a
    Few hours.

Thanks Tom, I imagine it is as I got it from VPW, but the leather element would be the "ring" that rides upon the shaft of the yoke?

Tom is very correct, I keep a Maxwell House Coffee can half full of gear oil there is always a pair of Pinion seals in it soaking. And yes those seals are leather.

Indian Head or #2 Permatex is great for the outer edge of the seal to the housing surface.

Life is easier in a lower gear.

Thanks, in lieu of not having a 300# torque wrench, I used my 150# twice as hard for the pinion nut.
I'll hopefully get it all put back in tomorrow. Until then...

So, how did you remove the old seal? I've tried drilling and tapping for a puller and they just pulled right out of the seal. Tried a bearing puller to no avail. Tired other methods without success also. Looking for suggestions.

            Thanks,
            Clark

I've heard sheet-metal screws, they have bigger threads so they bite the thinner metal of the seal better. I tack welded a pair of bolts to mine and used a puller on those, but I was rebuilding the whole unit so I had it on a jig on a bench where that was way easier.

I tack welded four 1/4" nuts to the seal, and put a 1/4" bolt in my slide hammer. I had it out in about 2 minutes.
