  • 1952 Power Wagon Starter

I have progressed the build to the point of engine rotation testing.

I have prepared all the usual bits and intend to run intermittently on the starter for some minutes before trying petrol power.

Now, I have operated the mechanical 'pinion' to engage the mechanical gearing and then with an extra push on the mechanical lever activated the solenoid and started the motor electrically.

It's all as I would expect up to now.

The motor is turning and the oil is being pumped, I have compression blowing out of the spark plugs and all is looking good.

However, when I release the mechanical starter the solenoid has electrically locked in and continues to rotate the engine, the only way to stop the motor is to disconnect the battery, then the solenoid electrically disengages and we are back to a neutral state.

This operation was unexpected and it looks like I need an electrical disconnect to open the solenoid hold-on to stop the starter running, the electrical diagrams I have do not show this.
The solenoid on the starter has a relay inside and can be operated electrically but the latch on is unexpected.

On checking the heavy duty battery cables and connectors there is a 100 amp foot-switch kicking around so I am thinking this is 'normal operation' for a Dodge 1952 Power Wagon.

    Am I wrong?

Second issue is that I eventually tracked the spark down and found that the distributor body was +12 volts. Now under normal condition it should be at 0 volts or earth with the points closed as its mechanically locked to the engine block. A separate earth cable from distributor to earth and the spark appeared.

Anyone know if what I am finding is normal.

I should add I am in the UK and it was a non running or connected machine when I started.....

I once had a starter sticking problem. Turned out to be the lever was on the wrong way an would bind and hold the starter on. Turned it around and presto, fixed.
