  • The New Fenway Project

Nobody can confidently say that he will still be living tomorrow, so I decided to start on the "New Fenway Project" today. It has been almost 10 years since the last one. Time to look things over and right whatever might be wrong.

Will be moving forward with cab and engine removal soon.

    Kevin:

Were those donuts in the engine compartment? On a more serious note, what wheels are those please?

    thank you.

The wheels are custom made by Marsh Racing Wheels...20 bolt beadlocks. They have performed excellent for me with the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw radials, but I miss the look of the original Budds. At some point during this rebuild I will be returning to original and selling my current setup.

Why is it that the inside of old truck cabs smell so good?

I will, my friend. This project has been in planning and budgeting for so long that it feels epic to actually be turning wrenches. I'll write and take photos as I go.

Kevin, I would be interested in your wheels and tires when you are ready to turn loose of them. You may recall me asking you about them a little over a year ago? At any rate, I never got around to making that purchase. Please keep me posted? Doug Ryan 618-973-8oo4. Thanks !

The wheels are very cool, but I excitement, and those wheels don't look half as dangerous as the split rim bud wheels!!!

My experience with the MRW beadlocks has been all good. They definitely hold an advantage over the Budds with regard to how quickly and easily tires can be mounted. I suspect the task of mounting a tire on a one of these wheels could be done by a preschool kid, and without any inherent danger.

The other obvious advantage is that you have a much wider variety of tires that can be used.

But still, I have a soft spot for the Budds. I like the classic look.

Many many years ago when I was a young lad trying to earn enough money for working on my car 1955 ford, high school, dates and gas money, I worked at a Goodyear truck / auto tire store.

In 1966 I witnessed a tire man changing the tires on a truck fitted with split rings such as your beloved Budd's. While he was installing the outer tire on drivers side rear, the, ring became dislodged and removed his left arm. This was a traumatic sight to a 17 year old kid, from that moment on I am petrified of these rims. I am 65 years young.

The truck that Dan Mininger is rebuilding for me will have modern Marsh Wheels installed.

Just as with Kevin, my MRW experience has been good. My only issue was with breaking bead lock bolts. My M's weight and with only the 20 bolt ring, experiences too much side wall deflection at road speed (60 MPH).

I mounted all 5 of mine by myself, and took my time and care, and did NOT have then balanced, but have had no problems.

I love them, they are heavy, but tough.
                            I drive a DODGE, not a ram!

                            Thanks,
                            Will
