  • Finally found a winch :-)

I finally found a winch assembly for my 1970 export powerwagon...

...but I had to buy the whole truck. Oh well, you can never have too many powerwagons ;-)

It's a '68 export model. I was planning to use it as spare parts but as the frame is in nice condition and the cab can be saved, I was thinking about using it for a V8 swap as the original engine and transmission is seized up (I have two extra sets of spare transmissions/axles)

Are there anybody around selling a V8 swap kit? (Like the ugly truckling kit)

why not consider the Cummins 4BT conversion? All who have done this have been extremely happy.
I hope to do the conversion in my WDX someday.

Well, I do very much like the cummins diesel engines (my daily driver is a Ram with a Cummins ISB) but I live in Denmark (Europe) and finding a 4BT overhere for a reasonable amount of money would be difficult I think.

I would prefer using an engine like the 318 V8, which I should able to find used for a small amount. The rough one of my PW's cost me twice the amount of money than its worth in scrap iron :-)

I am surprised that the Cummins engine would be expensive and difficult to find. Is there another more available option? It seems as though Europe runs on diesel engines.
But I have no business pressing the diesel idea, if that is not what you want to do. I just don't see the benefit of a 318 unless you change to higher gears and improve the brake system tremendously, all of which cost lots of money.

Well, there is not many 4bt's used overhere (from what I can find anyway).

Its actually easier to find a 6bt because of the use of them in the Dodge RAM's.

I know I might get slapped for asking this question, but about swapping a whole driveline from chevy truck? I already have multiple SBC's and BBC's laying around and I have the possibility of buying a cheap complete drivelinje with discbrakes (not incl engine) from a chevy 3500.

Will a drivelinje from an early (not diesel) 4x4 Dodge Ram be a better fit?

I have a background in mechanical engineering, so I don't mind a little fabrication, but I will have to use the original frame if I want to have it approved for public road use without too much trouble :-)

I haven't done what you are considering, but lots of guys have done it. I think the biggest problem anyone has found to exist is that the drive axles in later trucks are wider than the PW axles. A smaller problem might be in the spring perches. But they could be relocated on the housing.
Maybe someone who has done this conversion will offer their input.

My understanding is the tricky part is the front axle. Moving the spring perches is not that tricky and new perches are easily obtained, but the pumpkin housing is sometimes too close to one of the perches or in some instances is actually cast into the housing.

The other tricky part is adapting the later style cross-over steering to your frame, though adapting the axles and steering fixes as many problems (if not more) as it creates in doing the swap.

Otherwise the purists (like me) will cringe at Chevy drivetrain in a Dodge, but it's your truck, and it only needs to make you happy. Better I guess to have a Chevy engine in a truck you actually use than the stock engine in a truck that just sits rusting back to the earth.
