Can a 4BT bolt to the stock power wagon tranny?? Is there an adapter or anything of that nature out there. Just wondering if this can or has ever been done.

Not that I know of. I'm sure you could probably have one built by Advanced Adapters, but for the cost it would probably be cheaper and more effective to just use a more modern transmission. With the lower rev limit on the diesel your speeds would probably be even more restricted then with the flat-head on the stock tranny.

I figured that with 4.88 gears, the .73:1 overdrive and a 2300 rpm governor on the engine max speed will be around 70, aerodynamics aside.

Thanx Desoto. I was hoping to retain the factory pto winch so sticking to the original trans is pretty important.

An aftermarket transmission doesn't require getting rid of the winch. Many of the HD truck transmissions you can bolt behind the 4BT have PTO covers on them. You would just need the right PTO for that transmission.

That's my plan. The NV4500 has PTO covers on either side of the tranny. I have the PTO, just need to find the right input gear and I should be able to hook it up just like the original.

Another option some have gone is to convert the winch to run from a hydraulic motor driven from the power steering pump (or a PTO hydraulic pump), which would give you more flexibility in running the winch.

Ahh, as you can see I am new to this older pto type stuff. I did not know that. Looks like some more research is in order. Anything you can pass my way is really appreciated. I am sitting right now with the 230 rebuild or 4BT conversion. Just trying to decide which route to go.

So does anyone out there know what type of transmission can run the stock pto winch?

              Any truck transmission with a left side PTO port. NP420, NP445, NP435, NV4500, NP540, sm465 etc.

Excellent, thanx much. I take it they would have there own combos for ptos such as rear, front etc with one direction or forward reverse?

Pretty sure the ford and Eaton tranny also have the needed ports. Even some of the automatics have them.

Chelsea-Parker seems to be the go-to for PTOs, you will find many versions and configurations. The issue I've found is that while much of the PTO hasn't changed the input gears for older transmissions can be hard to find since they are often no longer made.

I have the correct reversible PTO for my early Chevy NV4500, but the input gear I need to mate it to the transmission is out of production since the transmission is no longer made and it's not the same as the Dodge version.

Be warned the Cummins conversion is not a simple task, its a ton of work and there is no kit to help you out.

The Chelsea 352 pto is bidirectional allowing you to power the cable both in and out. The basic unit fits whatever transmission with the correct drive gear installed. I bought mine for a good price on ebay. The parts I needed to adapt it to my application ran another two hundred dollars.
I've been hording up the needed parts for a flat fender 4bt, ZF 5speed, dana axel build since 09. Now all of that is on hand so I just need Time, Money, fabrication skills and decent place to work. The journey may turn out to be better than the destination, but that's ok by me. Jim
