I've bee talking with a Amsoil rep about switching all the lubes in my '01 CTD over to thier synthetic product. The rep also installs a dual remote bypass oil filter that filters out particulates less than 1 micron. He says that you can go 100K between oil changes. You just change the filter every 25K, top off the level, and send in a sample to see what, if anything is wearing. Anyone using this system in thier CTD?

Jonas, there is a guy I work with that uses the exact system you asked about. I will ask him what he thinks of the system and post his response. He is the guy with injectors, cold air system, Edge box, exhaust and a bigger turbo. His truck is very impressive to say the least. He also has alot of knowledge on diesels in general, used to own a marine repair shop that specialized in diesels. Kind of nice to have him around.

I'll get that info. posted as soon as possible.

A Cummins dealer can sell you an oil test kit pretty reasonably. Just warm up the engine good, remove the oil pan drain plug and let some of the oil to flow out, then fill the small plastic bottle with a proper sample. Place the filled bottle in an included mailer and send it off for testing. The lab will then return your results in a few weeks. I believe bulk oil companies could also get you the test kits. I test my oil once in a while to be sure there are no bearing or coolant problems developing. The peace of mind is worth the cost alone.

Jonas, I spoke with Scott yesterday and he is the guy that has the filter bypass system on his truck. It works exactly as you described and he said it will be on the next Dodge he buys. He currently has 197K on his truck and his samples look fine and are well within spec. He also switched to Amsoil on front/rear diffs. He swears by the stuff and he is on top of the diesel products. Hope this may help you make up your mind.
