I am curious as to how many 6-hole wheel W300's are out there in comparison to the number of 8-hole wheel W300's.
I have both, but I have a lot more of the 6-hole axles and parts.

mine are 8-hole
69-70-71 w-300s
The 69 & 71 both need ambition and money to be on the road

Gordon;
Have a '68 with 318 and it has 6-hole wheels. Tires were 7.50-16. Wheels have the narrow lock ring.

It is interesting to observe the results in the graph bars representing the results of the poll above. I would have guessed there were far more of the 6-hole trucks, just because they were made for more years. Maybe more of the newer ones survived. Go figure....

That is interesting. I would not think 17 inch singles would be very common.

This is the only Dodge I've ever seen with 17s, but a lot of the early fifties chevy and ford 1 one tons had 17s. The load rating is higher than 16s and comes closer to matching the load rating on the axles.
1/2 tons - 15"
3/4 tons - 16"
1 tons - 17"
1 1/2 tons 20"
ect. ect. ect.
all very logical considering tire construction of the time.
The tires (nearly new) are in the shed - I put 14 x 17.5 on it now.
Hauling hay out of the field is not work for skinny tires.
I don't know that the wheels and tires on the truck were original. Very little of it is original ; d100 cab, frame mounted fuel tank, 8x10 flatbed w/hoist - the frame has been shortened behind the rear axle for the hinge point, combine engine (industrial 318 poly - very tired). The drive train is suprisingly tight for a truck thats obviously been worked hard for a long time.
It would be a tough one to restore so it went to work.
I grow fonder of it all the time, probably my favorite just behind the M37.
It must be getting late - this post reads like I'm talking to myself, but, I'll leave it and hope you guys can make sense of it. I haven't set the web clock it's 10:40

What are you using for wheels to accept the 17.5 inch tires? Did you build these wheels?
Years ago in western Iowa I saw an M37 fitted with the very tire you describe.

They were flat center implement wheels. I had the center hole rebored and the new stud pattern added at a local machine shop.
I do sometimes exceed the 25 mph the tires are rated for. Not by much without ear plugs.

I have:
61 W300
Dana 70 F&R 4:88
Both 6 lug
-------------------
74 W300
Dana 70 F&R 4:88
Both 8 lug
I just voted for the 8-lug pattern, but now can't vote for the 6 lug pattern. Never did a poll before.
Guess the polls should be changed as more of a input file.
Don't think anybody would put in bogus info as this is good knowledge to all of us.

I'm just coming across this thread now as I recently purchased a 1966 W300. It has the 8 lug pattern. Other than number of lugs, does one have an advantage over the other? Is everything else the same?

An advantage of the 8-lug arrangement is that you have a wide variety of 8-hole wheels available to choose from to use on the truck.

In addition, the engineers found that smaller lugs in more quantity are stronger than fewer, larger lugs. Same theory goes for the axle splines which used to be large in a small number count and now are small in a large number count, for more strength. Seems backwards but the data supports it.

Gordon, you probably know this already, but I believe (I have learned not to say "I know" because that's not always true) all W300s had 6 hole wheels until the change in 1969 to 8 hole. I also believe that the front drive axles in the 6 hole Dana 70 are superior. This may result from my ongoing claim that "they don't make 'em like they used to".
I am trying to figure out how to post a picture of my '68 W300. Do I need some outside source to attach a picture? I don't have such. Jerry Henry

This is why I don't say "I know". Blows my theory about the '68/'69 switch. Unless your truck has later axles under it???

When you are posting, look below the box where you are typing. You will see a rectangular button marked Manage Attachments.
Then see the browse buttons. Click one of those and it will allow you to navigate to the place on your computer where you have the photo. Then click Open. That places the filepath for the image in the window. Then click on Upload.
Be sure to post, rather than preview, if you are attaching an image. Give it a try. I am out of town just now, but we will get you through this. Others may decide to comment, offering assistance, also.

Whoops. Error message: My file is 152kb and maximum accepted is 125kb??? How do I cut off some "kb"s?? Maybe if I let some air out of the tires?? JH
I think I figured it out. One more try:

We had the green '64 W200 up at Hollister in 2005 and the newly restored '62 W100 and the '64 W300 last year. The W300 is currently being restored and hope to have it ready whenever Hollister this year. It would be cool to have them all up there. Haul the W100 with the W300 and take the W200 up behind our camper. Would be pretty sweet!!

That is a cool tough looking truck. Never mind the price of fuel or your ear drums, you need to make that your daily driver!

single headlights with "pie plates" were from late 65 to 67 only.
68-69 had single headlights as do 70-71 each with a different grill.
67 was last year (I think) of the Poly 318, after that they had the 318 LA.

I posted the thread right below you. I am a dodge fan for life and have several rams and powerwagons, just this first one this old. What do I have to do to get you guys to offer a little advice? Im not trying to complain, I just know you guys are the only ones who know enough about these trucks to help me get it going.

I'm glad I bought this truck because I never would have realized there was anyone out there besides me with this Dodge addiction. This is my first foray into a vehicle 12 years older than me. This website has been alot of help and I'm sure it will continue to be in my quest to rebuild this truck.
P.S. I though that myself having 6 dodge trucks was bad, but some of you guys got it way worse than me. LOL!!!

Hmm, the math doesn't work for me, I'm 14 years older than my truck and my truck is older than yours???
ha! ha!
Happy Thanksgiving!
